Negotiating Your Worth After a Career Gap

8 min read

Returning to work after time away is hard enough. Here's how to walk into the salary conversation with confidence and data.

The career gap question is one of the most anxiety-producing moments in a job search for women returning to work. Here is the reframe that changes everything: a career gap is not a gap. It is a period during which you were doing something else — caregiving, managing a household, navigating a major life transition, building skills in a different context.

Research is your foundation. Before any salary conversation, know the market rate for the role in your geography. Use LinkedIn Salary, Glassdoor, and industry-specific salary surveys. Know the range, know where you should land given your experience, and have a specific number ready.

The number you give should be at the top of your range, not the middle. You can always negotiate down; you cannot negotiate up from a number you have already given.

Remember: the company is not doing you a favor by hiring you. You are bringing skills, experience, and value that they need. Negotiate from that reality, not from gratitude or relief.
