I Took My First Solo Trip the Year After My Divorce

I Took My First Solo Trip the Year After My Divorce

I was terrified. I went anyway. Here's what happened — and why I think every woman going through a major transition should do this.

I booked the trip on a Tuesday night in February, sitting alone in a house that used to be full of noise. I had never traveled solo. I chose Lisbon because I had always wanted to go and because it was far enough away to feel like a real departure.

The second day was different. I woke up with no agenda and no one to negotiate with about how to spend the morning. I walked for three hours. I stopped at every bakery. I sat in a square and watched pigeons and old men playing cards and felt, for the first time in months, genuinely present.

By day four I had found a rhythm that was entirely mine. Coffee at the same café each morning. Long walks in the afternoon. Dinner at the counter of small restaurants where I could watch the kitchen. I was learning what I actually liked.

I came home different. Not fixed — grief does not work that way. But I had evidence that I could navigate the world alone. That I was interesting company for myself. That there were beautiful things waiting for me that had nothing to do with my marriage or its ending.
